Sourwood October 2025

Exceptional Fall Color and Native Elegance for Professional Landscapes

At Triangle Nursery, Inc. we are proud to offer the Sourwood (Oxydendrum Arboreum) - a highly ornamental native tree known for its brilliant fall color, fragrant summer blooms, and refined form. This standout deciduous tree brings multi-season interest to both commercial and residential landscapes, and is especially valued for its reliability and visual impact.

For landscape professionals seeking a native tree with strong seasonal performance and long-term durability, Sourwood is an outstanding choice from projects across the continental United States.

A Native Magnolia with Four-Season Interest

Sourwood is best known for its spectacular fall display - as seen in the photo above - turning vivid shades of scarlet, crimson, and deep orange each autumn. In early summer, it produces delicate, white, cascading flower panicles that add elegance and attract pollinators.

Its slender, pyramidal form, fine-textured foliage, and graceful branching structure make it a favorite for designers who want both structure and softness in the landscape. As a native species, Sourwood is also well-adapted to regional climate conditions and supports local wildlife.

Care and Maintenance

Sourwood is a low-maintenance tree when planted in the proper site conditions.

  • Water: Requires regular watering during establishment; moderate moisture thereafter.

  • Mulch: Apply 2-3 inches of mulch to retain moisture and protect the root zone.

  • Prune: Minimal pruning required; remove dead or damaged branches as required.

  • Fertilize: Use an acid-loving tree fertilizer in early spring, as needed.

Once established, Sourwood is relatively drought-tolerant and performs well in acidic soils common throughout much of the Southeast.
